Mobility Management and Communication Support for Nomadic Applications

چکیده
There is an increasing demand for realizing communication services for nomadic environments, capable to provide applications with mobility management facilities and application-aware adaptation support. This paper proposes a novel mobility management and communication architecture specifically suited for nomadic environments, offering communication facilities and adaptation support by means of an API, named NCSOCKS. The driving idea is to provide application and middleware developers of nomadic services with essential mobility-enabled communication support, while hiding network heterogeneity in terms of wireless technology and leveraging the availability level of communication in spite of transient signal degradations. Transient signal degradations, due to device movements and/or shadowing, have the effect of increasing the handoff frequency. The proposed architecture integrates a novel mechanism to improve the connection availability by reducing the number of unnecessary handover procedures. In order to evaluate the proposal, an approach based on combined use of simulation and prototype-based measurements is adopted. 1 Rationale and Contributions Recent years have been characterized by an explosive growth in the deployment of wireless data communication technologies. The IEEE 802.11 family [1], Bluetooth [2], and the infrared wireless technologies [3] are nowadays widely deployed, and backed by a growing number of hardware and software vendors. This scenario has led to the definition of a new computing paradigm, the Nomadic Computing. Nomadic Computing (NC) is a form of mobile computing where communication takes place over strongly heterogeneous network infrastructure, composed of several wireless domains or cells, which are glued together by a permanent network infrastructure (the core network), aiming to provide anytime, anywhere

Providing nomadic CORBA servers by integrating Π2 and FATIMA
This paper presents an efficient solution for the nomadic CORBA server problem. The generic CORBA proxy platform Π2 provides efficient and transparent nomadic access to existing applications by offering a hand-over between different network types, optimized transport protocols for the wireless access, and application-specific compression. Up to now, Π2 was missing nomadic server functions. FATI...

متن کاملChallenges for Nomadic Computing: Mobility Management and Wireless Communications
In this paper, we present several challenges and innovative approaches to support nomadic computing. The nomadic computing environment is characterized by mobile users that may be connected to the network via wired or wireless means, many of whom will maintain only intermittent connectivity with the network. Furthermore, those accessing the network via wireless links will contend with limitatio...
متن کاملIdentifying the Awareness Mechanisms for Mobile Collaborative Applications
The complexity of modeling collaborative systems has been broadly recognized by the CSCW community. Mobile collaborative applications are a particular case of those systems, where design requirements and constraints are even more complex than in stationary solutions. Design complexity in mobile application increases because mobility changes the interaction requirements of nomadic users and the ...

This paper presents a pragmatic approach to protect the integrity of execution of an application in a nomadic business environment. Applications run in such contexts are based on the federation of appliances collaborating through direct communication as well as through the distribution of mobile pieces of code. Securing the operation of an application means protecting mobile code since executio...
